Eli Johnson & Free Worship

As I listened to them talk, I soon found out that they are not only a group of people that sing together, but a group of people that invite you into the presence of the Lord through understanding and knowing that we serve a God that loves you and will come see about you.

IndyGospel.com's Shaquila Mathews chats with Eli Johnson and Free Worship.

Eli and Free Worship are living on purpose and finding that when you are sensitive to God's leadings that He will never fail you.

When asked how Free Worship came about, Eli said it all started in South Carolina. After getting out of the military, Eli was offered a job in Indianapolis, IN. Prior to moving, God allowed Damon "Skip" Smith to connect with Eli, and when moving to Indianapolis, Eli asked Skip to move with him. Believing that this was the will of the Lord, they made their way to Indianapolis to continue Free Worship. When asked about the mission state for the group, Eli went on to say that Free Worship is a little unorthodox, a little "out of the box." To them it's not about singing on the next program, "church to church," because one thing Eli and Free Worship always keep before them is that it's about ministry. They walk to the heart beat of God, which means going to the nursing homes to minister, singing in the park, doing voter registrations, not forgetting about people, and letting people know that God hasn't given up on them.

As we continued to talk, I asked Eli how his local church plays a part in the group. Eli said that his Pastor is the overseer of the group. Eli and Free Worship understand being accountable and sitting under wise counsel and making sure that as a group they are being fed spiritually so they can better minister. Knowing that he is a leader, Eli feels it is important to have a covering.

We talked further about the project "The Praylude," which started out as just an introduction. The new album "Emancipated" will be out later this year, and the group had no idea that "The Praylude" would blow up like it has. It recently won "The Battle" on the nationally syndicated radio show "Coco Brother Live." Eli believes that is because of their faithfulness and willingness to hear God and send there CD in amongst thousands, and because of seed time and harvest, God is allowing them to reap.

Eli Johnson and Free Worship is a group that is Kingdom-minded and know that they have a purpose and a mission. They don’t get caught up in being the most famous group, they support other ministries, like Judah Band and Nue Breed and others.

With everything that is going on with this ministry, I asked Eli how has it changed the group, and he simply and sincerely said "the vision remains the same and that's to keep Glorifying God and getting this music out there and win souls for Christ."
