IndyGospel.com’s own Sha’Quila Mathews was blessed to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with Bishop Leonard Scott; father, pastor, musician, songwriter, and much more.

I caught up with Dr. Scott at his place of business, Scott Dentistry.

I asked Bishop Scott, “how do you balance it all?” He humbly answered and said “God gives us grace and puts people in our lives to help us,” he continued on to say “it’s a synergetic thing, everybody helping everybody.”

As we continued talking about his awesome music ministry, it didn’t take me long to know that Bishop Scott is a worshipper. I asked Bishop Scott, “Why is worship so important to you? He replied, “It’s my calling.” The gift of worship dates back to his days as a worship leader at his church. Bishop Scott recalled a time when a gentleman came up to him after ministering and said, “You know you’re not an artist, you are a worshipper.” That day, life was spoken into his ministry.

I asked Bishop Scott how Tyscot Records was developed. He simple answered, “Our church choir at the time needed a label to do their album and from there other artists began to inquire.” Tyscot is now home to artists such as Rev. John P. Kee and New Life Community Choir, Dr. Bobby Jones, The Rance Allen Group, Bishop Larry D. Trotter, and Deitrick Haddon and Voices of Unity. Established in 1976, Tyscot Records is still going strong, and is the world’s oldest black-owned gospel recording company.

Bishop Leonard Scott has been recording gospel music since 1986, which includes nine albums. He has also written two books. I asked him, “What words of encouragement do you have for up and coming Christian artists?” His response, “Stay focused… it’s easy to get caught up and lose site of ministry.”

As our time drew to an end, I asked him, “What is Bishop Scott listening to?” Showing his appreciation for today's gospel, he responded, “Israel and New Breed, Tye Tribbett, and Morris Chapman just to name a few.”

There are so many dimensions to Bishop Scott but the one thing that is ever present is his undeniable love for God. It is reflected in his business, his ministry and all that he does.
